How do I keep my cats safe while I paint rooms in my home?

I have two cats, one just over a year old and the other about a half a year old. I am getting a new roommate and we are planning on painting her bedroom and the living room during the winter months. How do I keep my cats safe while I paint rooms in my home?
First, I would ask if you are painting with Latex or Oil based paint. If latex, the only real problem you may have is that they will get it on their fur as the fumes are non toxic. If they get it on their fur, they will obviously lick it off, which could cause some problems, but if you can handle washing them then the problem is solved. If you are painting with oil, everything about it is bad for them, especially since the oil based paint is not water soluble. If that is the case, I would be much more concerned. Since cats are notoriously difficult to contain and somewhat ';rebellious'; if you are really that concerned, I would recommend taking them to a cat ';hotel'; or have them stay with friends for about 2 days from the time that you start the painting. You can try your best to keep them out of the rooms, but there is no guarantee that you will succeed. How do I keep my cats safe while I paint rooms in my home?
Don't be a spoil sport - let them help! I have spent most of my spare time re-decorating. My cat followed me from room to room as I did it. She would find somewhere to lie down and then either sleep or watch me. On some occasions, she would beat me to the top of the ladder! I kept a window open whilst painting, but if you are concerned about yours, then shut them in a room not being decorated until the paint is dry (Although my black cat looked very fetching with a pale cream bum!)
I would keep them in another room while the paint is drying, so they can't dip their paws in the paint, or rub the walls or anything, and open the windows to help with the fumes (which I guess you would probably do anyway...)
Keep your cats in one room while you paint, give each painted room two days before you let them in again, having aired them out properly.
