Woodtick is exactly right on the square footage and running footage for most paint. so, a 10x10 room would be 40 running feet and require 1 gallon of paint.
If the walls are in bad shape or you are drastically lightening the color, I recommend prming 1st so you can get 1 coat coverage on the paint. you get a little more distance out of primer....about 60 running feet a gallon.
Tools: you'll need a basic roller for each person painting, and trim and edge brushes, tarps, ans paint trays. I would estimate about $35-50 in material supplies besides paint for a 2-3 person crew.
Cost of paint can vary greatly. At your local home improvement store, flat finish gallons are about $25. If you go to satin finish, about $28.
At a paint retailer (like benjiman moore) you'll pay more...like $35 a gallon or more.
Primer will run about $30 per gallon. Sometimes you can catch it on sale at your home improvement store.
So, i'd figure out how many running feet you're painting and then how many gallons of paint and primer you need. Add those up and then add your tool budget.
ex: 4 rooms at 12x12 = 192 running feet
192 running feet = 3.84 gallons of paint (so 4)
4 gallons of paint @ $28/ gallon = $112
Primer (3 gallons) = $90
Tools = $50
Total = $252

A gallon of paint covers approximately 400 sq. ft. With 8' walls, that translates to about 50 running feet. Add more for a second coat, which will be necessary if the walls are in bad shape, or if you are making a major change in color. Add for ceilings in you are painting a different color, and primer if needed. Are you doing this yourself? If not, figure to pay about $150-250/room for labor.
