What would be the effect of using a car engine spray paint to paint my metal stair railings inside my home?

That paint is designed to 'heat cure'.

Do you have some means of heating the railing? What would be the effect of using a car engine spray paint to paint my metal stair railings inside my home?
There should not be any long term effects of using car engine paint on stair railings. Once most of the solvents have evaporated out of the paint to allow it to set, it should be pretty safe for use inside a house. You need to be careful of the solvents and the overspray (the little bits of airborne paint) when using it. Make sure you pick a dry day with a bit of breeze and open as many windows as you can. At the very least, you need to wear a face dust mask to ensure you don;t breathe in all the airborne paint particles. Take regular breaks from spraying and use plenty of dust sheets, particularly in the immediate vicinity (unless you want everything the same colour as the railings!

PS. Remember to flat back the existing paint - use something like a 400 grit paper to make sure the paint sticks!

Good Luck What would be the effect of using a car engine spray paint to paint my metal stair railings inside my home?
I wouldn't use it. buy from Sherwin Williams what is called DTM ( paint to metal) is a lot safer, no fumes and won't harm kids or pets
Be careful of spray paint fumes. You should take the railings outside.
Car engine paint is a high temp paint with good bonding qualities, If you like the color, go for it !
That would be fine, but you may not want it if you have young kids licking it.
It would give it a nice finish and last long.

New home with ceiling seams showing through paint.?

Moved into a new home several months ago and noticed that the seams in the ceiling connecting the drywall can actually be seen in one room. Is this a common problem?? and what can be done. Do I have any recourse??New home with ceiling seams showing through paint.?
I am a 37 year experienced painter, which has included tons of drywall finishing as well...Now days people use that crappy fiberglass tape and assume this will save one coat of mud(joint compound) on the ceilings, and walls as well...A real finisher will use the paper tape and apply the full 3 coats required and not two like most of these handyman/fiberglass tape users...They have been doing this for years ..quality workmanship is hard to find..also alot of people think that you simply run the joint compound down the center of the tape and this is called taping and floating..not so..to float...means to make even..some joints require floating out to one side or the other..sometime both on bad rafters as far as 36 inches to either side..You do not see that much anymore..they run the joint compound down the center of the joint..and think that is all thier is to it...Your problem is shoddy tradesmen/builders...New home with ceiling seams showing through paint.?
yes and no .....

as it a new home it take some time to settle ...

i would suggest around i year .....

but in your case , they didnt apply much mud to the celing

if your ceiling is just painted , with texture, this will happen

most home cover the ceiling in texture hideing this ...

maybe after a year you could re address this issue

but i n the mean time , take , pictures, date the pictures, and call your builder..... most builders will fix them , but not

til lthe building has stop moveing , you can see why ....

to answer your question yes it is commen
Everyone in my family has had a home built and it happened every time. I'm told that this is from the house settling a bit. That is also the reason that when we finished our house, we picked an off-white shade of paint and painted the entire house with it. Then once we dealt with all these issues, we got more creative with the painting and decorating. Since it is not happening in the entire house, I don't really think that it is due to bad workmanship.
Is it a newly built house? Its quite common for the house to move around a bit while it is settling, and this causes beams to do this! It can be fix fairly easily and most building contracts have a 3 monthly and yearly maintenace guarantee Call your builder and see if you can claim the reapirs! =)
it happens when the drywaller has a bad finisher. They should have applied compund to the seams to make it look seamless in the end. You can do this yourself or hire someone to do it. When you are done the compound work, you , of course, will have to re-paint.
or you can use moulding around to hide it

Around how much will it cost to paint the outside of my home?

A simple formula that seems to hold pretty true is between $1 and $1.50 per sq.ft. which includes at least two coats of finish high quality name brand paint. Example 2000 sq. ft. would be between $2000 and $3000. Be careful when getting estimates you will find places that are cheaper per sq. ft. but then they add on things like masking around windows and doors, cleaning up, and extra for two colors. Hope this helps.Around how much will it cost to paint the outside of my home?
Depends on where you live, what brand of paint you will use, the size of your house, etc.Around how much will it cost to paint the outside of my home?
depends how big your house is
I suppose that it would be directly related to how big your house is....which you failed to mention.

I haven't heard anything about problems installing PSP X2 on Vista and there's nothing in Corel's PSP X2 Knowledge Base about it. I installed and am running the program on Vista with no problems. What exactly is happening when you try to install? If you get an error message, what does it say?

  • Deticated home theatre paint. Should the ceiling be the same color as the walls or darker then the walls.?

I am in th process of choosing paint for my deticated home theatre. I am going to use a really dark nuetral brown or maybe even a charchol color for the walls. Should I paint the ceiling the same color or should I paint it darker, maybe even black? I want to make sure that the wall and ceiling color do not reflect back on the screen during bright scenes. Any thoughts?Deticated home theatre paint. Should the ceiling be the same color as the walls or darker then the walls.?
Just as long as you use a flat (non-reflective) paint in a relatively dark color, it doesn't really matter. It's more of a style thing.Deticated home theatre paint. Should the ceiling be the same color as the walls or darker then the walls.?
If black is an option I would definitely go that route. As Jeff mentioned, be sure to use a flat or non reflective paint so that you won't see a reflection of the screens image in your ceiling. That effect can be stunning as the lack of a reference point for a ceiling can really seem spacious when the lights go out. All part of the ';suspension of disbelief'; that you are trying to create when designing a theater.

I moved into to a old home that has to much wall paper, I would like to paint over it, can that be done?

How would I go about painting over wall paper and make it come out looking very good. To much paper to pull down, and the home is very old.I moved into to a old home that has to much wall paper, I would like to paint over it, can that be done?
buy/rent a fabric steamer and really blast the walls after you score them (cut checks into the wallpaper) and it should scrape off easily enough, you will regret painting over itI moved into to a old home that has to much wall paper, I would like to paint over it, can that be done?
If the walls are in good shape, then you should be able to paint. Try a little spot first, let it dry completely, then see what you think.
    prime it then paint it
NOPE YOU HAVE TO TEAR IT UP!!!
I would not paint over wallpaper,it wouldn't cover,it would be rough and it may not stay painted.
First, I would use a primer over the wallpaper. Ask at the hardware store or wherever you shop for paint supplies if a water based primer would be better or an oil based primer.

Then I would paint over that with the compatible paint. If there are any nail holes, now is the time to fill them, and sand them down flat.
I have done this before and very successfully (3 years ago and still looks great!!!) The first consideration is what kind of shape the wallpaper is in. If the wallpaper is not curling up on the edges AT ALL, it will be a somewhat easier task. If the wallpaper is curling up on the edges, you can get a wallpaper knife and trim the edges that are peeling. Then, you must seal the wall with kilz stainblocker or shieldz primer. you can buy these at Home Depot. I like the Shield-Z the best. You would not want to paint yet because if you paint without texturizing the wall, it will look terrible and the lines will definitely show. You need to buy some sheetrock mud (Home Depot or Lowe's) and a texturizing leather roller and roll the sheetrock mud onto the wall so that you are not putting paint on a totally smooth wall that will show ALL imperfections. This might all be sounding a bit complicated, but it is not difficult and don't let it discourage you. I am a nurse and not a painter and I did it and it looks beautiful. The best thing I can suggest (This is what I did) is to go to a reputable paint store (Benjamin Moore, Sherwin Williams) and ask them how to do it. You don't even have to buy your supplies there. They are usually very happy to help. Advice from professionals goes a long way and will make you feel better than hearing a bunch of different opinions about how to do something from people who may or may not know what they're talking about. Anyway, once you have texturized the wall, wait 24 hours before you paint it. Trust me. You can do it!!!! I did!!! And always do at least two coats of paint. The color will be much truer and much prettier and uniform if you do!!!!!
You have 2 problems. First depending on how many layers of wallpaper you have it can start to separate if you use latex paint. You paint it and before you get the room finished the paper is peeling off.

Second if you remove the wall paper then you might find that the plaster is cracked under it and end up knocking it down and drywalling it.

I would test a small out of the way area to see how many layers of wall paper you have. Remember that years ago there was no such thing as strippable paper so they just papered over the top and often painted over that. I once had to steam 7 layers of wall paper off the walls of an old house.
cover it with a good coat of KILZ and then primer.
Ah yes, I have a very old home in which the previous owners (my grandparents) painted over all the wallpaper. The paper bubbled and eventually pulled loose in spots, and quite frankly, it looks like crud.

The wallpaper seams just jump out at you, and anytime someone bumps up against the wall, the paint flecks right off.

If you simply can not afford to remove that wallpaper first, may I suggest you do a glazing %26amp; rag rolling technique instead? With this technique, you apply a base coat, and them come back through with a second coat that has been thinned with a special solution. This second coat is applied with a rolled up rag, and the end effect looks like Italian stucco. I did this in a room that had been painted copper over the wallpaper, and it worked just smashingly. The beauty of the technique is that it covers up the seams and all the wallpaper whoopsies that a flat or semigloss paint will show.

A place like Home Depot will have DIY brochures and the paint available.
Been there and done that only I was crazy and stripped the wallpaper, the ceilings too. To answer the question, first is the wallpaper in good shape and is it rough texture or slick. Rough wallpaper is very porse and absorbent which makes it easy, slick well ive yet to have luck. Also with an old house you need to apply kilz stain block primer believe me, money well spent. OH yes if the wall paper is loose in spots take a scraper and get that part off, Bare with me, dry wall mud can fill it back flush this will make the finish look alot nicer.. NOTE you will always see the seams with out a professional dry waller to take care of it..
    .
Is the wallpaper attached to the wall real good? That old paper is pretty thick. If is attached real good yet. Put a thin coat of a good primer and then 2 coats of your paint. Try not to over saturate the wall, thin coats are best because, to wet will make the paper bubble. Do not even try to paint if the paper is peeling anywhere it will make it worse with the paint, sand it to make it as smooth as you can then do the steps.. I know this because I spent 6 hours trying to take that old stuborn (the only nice word I can think of right now) paper off with a machine I rented and only peeled off maybe a couple yards of paper. So I brought the machine back. Sanded what I could to make it look okay. And, primed and painted the stupid room. .......................GOOD LUCK..............
I wouldn't think so, but call your local paint store tomorrow. Don't call Home Depot or a big store, they don't know anything and they just want to sell you something. Call a local independent store and ask them. Some new product may be available and you could try it in one room and see how it works. Good luck!

Are you Afraid of (paint)colors in your home?

No! Why be afraid of color? If you don't like it just paint over it with another color. Are you Afraid of (paint)colors in your home?
no, I think colors are good. They help show your personality. Are you Afraid of (paint)colors in your home?
No, I'm not, but my mom was. Everything was white until I went around painting it all. She freaked out a little at first but now she wants to get even crazier than me with the rest of the house. :)
Most people think I am because I have all my rooms done in off white. I love it like that! I love to decorate with color in my accessories. I can change the color of the room just by changing the accessories. I probably will never paint my walls another color.
no, not afraid of color in my home. We painted our family room a shade of tan, and the kitchen and living room are still an eggshell color

We have big doorways, so I need to find colors for the other 2 rooms that would flow from one room to the other
nope...every room is a different color, but they all flow.

I'm looking for an elegant gold color to paint my texture walls inside my home. does anyone suggest a color ?

i'm paintin my living room texture walls. my furniture is cherry wood with frabric sofa and love seat in gold and rustic orange color.I'm looking for an elegant gold color to paint my texture walls inside my home. does anyone suggest a color ?
Anything in the taupe or camel family would be good -- stay away from metalics. Take a pillow to your paint store and match the lightest color and you'll have a winner.

If you want a cozy feeling go darker on the paint swatch than the lightest color and the room will seem to hug you. I always choose darker colors and get so many compliments.

If you have high ceilings you can paint on color to 6 feet (taupe/camel) and then another above it that is lighter that goes on the ceiling too. This makes the room feel cozier too -- if the ceiling is too high the room feels empty and a bit sterile.

Also, to get a truer color with depth and good coverage (also saves money because less less coats are necessary) ask that your primer be tinted with the same color you are painting your walls. The primer will be a little lighter but will bring the wall closer to the finish color which will make cleaning easier too (ever wash a wall and the paint comes off? -- colored primer will help this).I'm looking for an elegant gold color to paint my texture walls inside my home. does anyone suggest a color ?
i have just redone some rooms in my home, in the one room i painted the walls a light toupe, color and then used a seasponge to lightly sponge paint the room using a champainge color on top. gave it a very elegant soft feel. this was important because its a old victorian with lots of dark wood, and old mix tapestery furniture. so the colors could all blend.

I live in a mobile home so my walls are covered with wallpaper. i want to paint but i need to texture. how?

I'm willing to pay someone if i have no other options, but i was hoping there is a way to do it myself that won't look cheap. I'm not sure what my options are, does anyone know different ways to texture wallpapered walls?I live in a mobile home so my walls are covered with wallpaper. i want to paint but i need to texture. how?
You must first test the wallpaper to see if it is going to adhere to the wall once it is wet. If it does, then it is safe to texture and paint over the wallpaper. It was actually recommended to me by my painter, as he said removal of wallpaper all too often goes beyond just the paper and adhesive. It can sometimes peel off the layers of drywall. Not good!

Texturing is a job best left to the professionals. I am pretty handy and can do a variety of small jobs, but it is a big undertaking and you will thank yourself later for not putting yourself through that and letting a pro do it from the beginning.I live in a mobile home so my walls are covered with wallpaper. i want to paint but i need to texture. how?
Frankly I don't think you can ';paint'; or ';texture'; the inside of a mobile home and make it look good. You can surely go to a mobile home store and ask what are your alternatives. Maybe there is a paper that would ';look like'; what you want. It's really a shame to invest money though in a mobile home since it's not really a house, it lasts only 1/3 of the length of time a house does, and it's like an automobile.
Live in a mobile home also. Gotta love them walls. Here's what I did with my bathroom. I got a bucket of drywall paste, and got a lot of plastic (Walmart) bags, and put drywall on the wall a small section at a time., and while putting the drywall mud on the wall , build up layers of drywall and stipple the walls with the Walmart bags and then paint. Wait until the drywall mud drys before painting. I hope you understand what I'm trying to get across. You can seal it as I did not, and if you rub up against the wall for any reason, the tips of the stippling show up. Good Luck! Hope this helps.
I live in a mobile home as well and thats not wall paper on the walls, its the paneling that they put up. The walls that I didnt hang traditional dry wall on I painted with a good quality primer then painted the walls what ever color i wanted. They sell textured paint that you can have tinted to your color. I have redone every room in our home, 3 bedrooms, 2 baths and have had no problem what so ever with the paint coming back off of the walls that were primed and painted.
Kimmi is right that is not ';wallpaper';. It is however drywall paper and is your actual drywall. Take down all that trim they they staple over the drywall joints. You can fill and sand the joints but its tricky. Use drywall mud and tape as is commonly used. After the joints are filled and sanded give it a good coat of Kilz. Go to Lowes, HD, or your favorite builders supply and tell them you want to texture your walls. They will fix you up with the proper coating. Use a stiplng brush or some coatings can be rolled on. You will use a trowel to knock down the peaks on your walls. Some people leave the peaks on ceilings for acoustic reasons. But to me that's a monster dust catcher. None of this is as hard nor complicated as one might think. Talk to the people at the builders supply and give it hell. Preparation of the original surfaces is of primary importance. If the drywall covering is coated (ie. some kitchens and bathrooms) then roughen it up with medium grain sandpaper after taking down that trim and before you ';kilz';. Easy on all the sanding now. You don't want to remove any of the covering exposing the chalk.
I would recommend NOT painting over wallpaper.
    very messy and time consuming

    another suggestion...

sponge painting is great for 'hiding' blemished walls

do a light base and a darker tone on the sponge
You should paint a nice layer of killz. It smells bad, but it helps the paint stick. Then you can paint however you want. I've done a job similar to this before.

Should i paint or stain the wood trim in my home?

im moving into my new home next week, but before i do i need to paint the inside. all the wood trim/doors in the house are unfinished, meaning the wood is natural with no stain or paint on it yet.

im not sure if i should paint or stain it? i dont really know the difference as far as how it will look... i imagine staining is harder/more costly....? i wanted to do a rich expresso brown color. what do you think i should do?Should i paint or stain the wood trim in my home?
This depends on the woodwork. If it is a beautiful wood trim then you would want to stain it. But if it is the less expensive trim found on most new homes these days, paint it white or cream. All the work to stain something so inexpensive is not worth the time and effort and wouldn't add anything to the look.Should i paint or stain the wood trim in my home?
I agree with dawnb, if it's a nice wood I would stain it, if it's a cheaper wood paint it. If you stain cheap wood it just makes the cheap wood look stand out. Staining isn't bad, but like painting, it's much easier if the trim is taken off.

  • What colors should I paint my victorian home?

I have a victorian house with a red roof and red brick - I would like to paint the base coat in a cream color - do you have any suggestions on what colors I should use for the trim and access colors? What colors should I paint my victorian home?
Many folks think of Victorian homes as being brightly colored and gingerbread-y. While this is true in some communities, it was only really a very small segment of Victorians, specifically the grand Queen Annes which were treated in this way and only then in certain communities such as San Francisco's painted ladies. Most Victorians were painted earth colors, especially late Victorians as there was a fascination and pre-occupation will all things in nature. This later manifested itself in the Arts and Crafts Movement and Art Nouveau. I digress, certainly the brick and red roof are calling the shots, and I have absolutely no problem with putting lighter colors on the bottom. I'd say too that a deep burgundy sounds great but be careful as the extreme contrast between light cream and dark burgundy will only serve to push those colors farther apart...the cream will look lighter and the burgundy may read as a black from more than 10 feet away. Avoid green as you don't want to set up a Christmas palette of red/green. This may sound radical but I would recommend a palette of cream with rose and darker red accents. I am not suggesting a pink house or bright red trim, certainly you will want to make these very muted colors. Try these and see if they don't fit the bill of natural looking yet compliment the brick and roof as well as the Victorian temperment...all colors Ben Moore

http://www.exterior-house-paint-colors.c鈥?/a>What colors should I paint my victorian home?
One of the paint companies, it might be Benjamin Moore, has a folder with 'historical' colour combinations. Maybe you can get some ideas there, or if there are any museums where you live that have local stuff, perhaps they know what colours were used in your area.

I don't know what you mean by the ';base coat';. Do you mean the foundation area, next to the ground? If so, I think it's a mistake to have that part lighter than the rest of the house. I think it's better to have a darker colour at the bottom.
Cream is a good neutral color and lots of other colors ';go with'; it. I think color is very personal. Think about what colors you like and what colors make you feel happy. Victorian houses usually have lots of millwork and gingerbread details, so you might consider making these pop a little or a lot with a contrasting color. I personally am not a lover of the color blue for houses, but that's just my taste. If you like blue, you might choose a shade of blue and use that as the accent color, which would like nice with cream. Green also looks pretty with cream, and some of the lighter green shades, almost pastels, have become quite popular as trim colors. Then all shades of red, but I would go softer if using red so that it is almost peachy or even rust (orange undertones). Also, if you can find a home decorating magazine that illustrates Victorian homes, you could look through that for ideas. Sometimes you end up liking something you would never have thought about. Good luck!
Maybe a deep burgundy or country red. If you are interested in keeping it historical you can go to your city counsel or library to find out what the original colors were. Hope this helps.

Exterior Paint Colors for New Home?

The home we are buying has a horrible red clay colored brick on the bottom half of the house. The house needs painting so we'd like to use colors which will diminish the appearance of the orangy-pink brick. Any ideas for siding, shutters and trim?Exterior Paint Colors for New Home?
Lite colors will draw the eye away from the brick. I would not suggest painting the brick.Exterior Paint Colors for New Home?
How old is the house. If it's old, then sand blasting the brick will probably lighten it up.

Then use a color that draws your eyes away from the brick, perhaps something in yellow.

If you want to totally hide the brick, have the whole house done in a vynal siding in a color appropriate for the style of the house.
    Anything that suits your eyes.
Congratulations on your new home. Color is a BIG deal...drive around town and look at other homes. Find a color that you like and ask the owners what it is (ask for brand of paint also). I had trouble envisioning what my house would look like from a little paint swatch. As for the brick, it depends on whether you're going to remove it, cover it up or paint/treat it. There is a brick cleaner/acid wash available that goes with a pressure washer. Try pressure washing it to see if it tones down to an acceptable color. If the bricks are old and you decide you don't want them...call a local recycle building company. They will oftentimes remove the brick for you if they can have it (it's usually a tax deductible donation also). Have fun with home ownership!!!
Seems like the color of the brick is objectionable to you. Instead of just painting the house, why not try painting the brick also (the same or with a complimentary color)?

ask about how old the building or house is, after a certain time they no longer made the paint, i would think if you had it at your job, you would be told about it, and real estate would have informed you about having it on the walls of your house before you moved inIs there a way that you can tell if you have lead-based paint in your home, office, or jobsite?
Yes, there are instruments that measure lead in paint. They are x-ray fluorescence (XRF) instruments and they have send X-rays into the materials and measure what frequencies come back. They then calculate the density of the lead and report it in milligrams per sqaure centimeter. Over 1 mg/cm2 is considered lead-based paint (LBP) in the USA.

Those machines cost $10,000 to $20,000 and rent (only to trained personnel) for $1,000 a week or so. Versus firms can come in and do a LBP survey - $500 or so would be a competitive price for a whole house.

The home-owner solution is a dye-based test for paint, toys, cookware, etc. You use a ';lead check'; test swab to rub down the material (having made a razor-knife cut through all the paint layers). LBP turns pink. Takes 5 minutes to read the instructions and 30 seconds to do each test. About $18 for 4 tests from a better paint store. About $10 for the same kit from the manufacturer.

    http://www.homaxproducts.com/products/pa鈥?/a>

LBP was outlawed for use in residential settings after 1978. It's use and concentration in paints decreased markedly since 1950. But WWII era and older structures can have screamingly high levels, especially in exterior and trim work (door and window frames).

    Hope that helps.

I haven't used low-odour paints on the basis that if they were as good as high odour ones then the high odour ones would have no advantage and manufacturers wouldn't bother to continue producing them.

Whether you need normal high odour paints dpends on if you want the best durability. Internally for most DIY-ers low odour paint will probably suffice. Trained decorators are unlikely to use them unless you have reason to request it. On exteriors it is better to use oil-based normal paints as you need maximium durability.Gloss paint for your home?

Use Satinwood............... goes on easier, smells less and does the same job.
Go for eggshell low odour better finish, drys quiker with less smell.
iv'e used the non smell gloss and it is alot better smell wise.
The fumes off oil based paint gives this problem. A leaflet from my supplier states that the VOC % has to reduce under EU law by 2010 which means oil based paints could disappear, being replaced by water based. Water based gloss or satinwood don't cover as well but they dry much quicker and you can get more than 1 coat on in a day. The other advantage is that they don't smell anywhere as bad as oil based and rather than keep your brushes in a paint mate or tub of water, they will just wash out in water.
i'ts then same just dorsnt smell I do prefer the egg shell gloss
Yes the low odour stuff is fine and much more pleasant to use.
    Gloss,.thats well bad,';Take the shame';.
hi, i have just used dulux realife for wood and radiators, its heat resistant and scuff resistant, hardly any smell at all, and what light smell it has got doesnt linger!

really easy to put on and paint brushes you wash out with water, not messy like gloss!

i used two coats as i was painting over wood that previously had gloss on them but on new wood think you could get away with one coat! dries really quick too! :)

you get the same finish as gloss!!!
The non smell gloss is probably water based and will therefore, in my opinion as a decorator, not give such a good finish. You can get satin type finishes but the same will still apply. Always, whatever it says on the tin, use and undercoat and then a topcoat, lightly rub down when dry, and then a final top coat. Takes longer but the finish will be perfect.
why would you use gloss? I'm covering gloss on 100 year old walls- it's got a sheen that highlights every crack and flaw - have you thought about a satin?
Get normal high sheen gloss i recommend exterior gloss as it leaves a great finish and a really high sheen and is very durable.

Don't be put off by the fact that its exterior.

Make sure you get the oil based gloss if you can acrylics aren't bad but not as good.

Im moving into a home thats trim around bedroom doors and and hallway is not in the best ship can I paint it?

Would it be better to just replace rather than paint or could painting be an inexpensive fix? Could I use some type of top coat to keep it from chipping easily?Im moving into a home thats trim around bedroom doors and and hallway is not in the best ship can I paint it?
Sure you can paint it, but first look at the wood. If it is a nice hard wood, such as oak and you like the look of stained wood, then strip the paint and stain the wood. Otherwise, a light sanding should be fine and then prime and/or paint. (Assuming there's no concern about lead paint -- don't want to sand there...bigger discussion). Good luck.Im moving into a home thats trim around bedroom doors and and hallway is not in the best ship can I paint it?
I would get new trim. That way you can get the trim you like and that way you can either paint it or use varnish it. Varinish is better because it lasts longer and the color of the stain no matter what shade will go with everything. Plus, it looks better.

Home Remedy for removing old paint from old door?

I have an old door that has at least 3 layers of paint on it. I used TSP to remove MOST of the paint and now I am down to last couple of layers before door. I want to remove without scrubbing or damaging wood so I can stain the door.

Now - THE BIG QUESTION - does anyone know of any kitchen products that will cause paint to bubble up so it will come off easier. For example - vinegar, vanilla, etc. Not looking for paint thinners or chemicals. Something you can find in your house.Home Remedy for removing old paint from old door?
i had an accident and cleared ALL the finish off the hardwood floor. i spilled a bottle of jamacian rum. your best bet for removing this paint without chemicals is with a hot air paint stripper...blows super hot air ..melts the paint...drys imediatly..you will need a scrapper, wire brush.

Is there a website where you can view different paint colors and then upload photos of the rooms in my home?

play around with the Sherwin Williams color visualizer to help you imagine how the colors will look together. It is the best paint visualizer on the web, imho. I like how their color palette is laid out, I like that you can search by color family %26amp; color name, the ';painted'; rooms look the most realistic, and it suggests coordinating color schemes. You can literally spend hours:

Should be able to do it.

How much paint do I need to repaint the outside of a 10' X 50' mobile home with a 12' X 12' addition?

You might get by with 6 gal. but I'm gonna say 7 just to make sure AND this is ';per coat';. A lot is going to depend on the the quality of the paint you purchase, the condition and texture of the surface that you are painting and if one coat will cover it. If you purchase a decent quality paint and the surface is in fair condition and you are not doing a drastic color change then you should get by with one coat. Good Luck

On a double wide manufactured home, is it OK to paint over those covered drywall panels?

It sure is..I've been doing it for years. Be sure to cover all stains before painting, the spray stain cover works great for this. If the vinel covered walls have dark prints on them it will take two coats of paint...good luck.On a double wide manufactured home, is it OK to paint over those covered drywall panels?
It is OK. However, if you intend to do so yourself, seek the advice of your local paint store professionals. There are certain ways to prepare the surface that they can help you with. As with any painting job the better the surface is prepared the better the outcome. On a double wide manufactured home, is it OK to paint over those covered drywall panels?
No problem. The only thing is, they often have patterns on the paper that covers the drywall. It may take more than one coat of paint to cover it. Useing primer/sealer for the first coat is better and saves paint.

If the trim of the house is white i would paint the door the same. Do you have windows in the front and what is the trim around them? Use that color and will all tie in together.
I would paint the door white to match the trim. It will help give the house a more traditional and elegant appearance, and will really make the colour of the surrounding flowers stand out.
Make it a eye catching green or daffodil yellow would be a statement.Sounds gorgeous.

    Black.

Look at other peoples house when driving or go to a new upscale sub division for new ideas.
I would say a khaki color or even an olive/khaki
I'd paint it a nice soft yellow.
I'd go with a neutral black or grey, or possibly white to match your white trim. There are many varieties of red brick and depending on the shade, a colourful door in yellow or green could clash quite badly.
A Tuscan yellow or olive green.

I do know that exterior colors were generally ';earthy'; in tone at that time, particularly in craftsman homes. Greens were ';mossy';, browns were popular and reds were of a ';burnt'; shade. Think of autumnal colors. Usually siding would be one color, trim another and window mullions a third (usually reddish in tone). The point was to reflect materials and design which was ';honest'; and somewhat muted.

By all means, check out 'American Bungalow' magazine for ideas and inspiration. It's a great resource:

Identifying Characteristics of a Craftsman Home

The search for Craftsman homes is a continuing project for Ray Stubblebine, the curator of this exhibition and author of the accompanying brochure. Ray has discovered many houses himself, and many have been pointed out to him by people all over the country who have been alert to their distinctive Craftsman features.

Gustav Stickley and The Craftsman Home

    GUSTAV STICKLEY (1858-1942) so synthesized, romanticized and popularized the Arts %26amp; Crafts style of architecture during the first two decades of this century that today the style is known generically as ';Craftsman.';

However, only a house originating from plans published by Stickley through his magazine The Craftsman can be a true Craftsman Home. He published descriptions and drawings of homes in this magazine beginning in 1901. In the January 1904 issue, he featured the first official Craftsman Home and announced that henceforth the magazine would feature at least one house a month, and subscribers could send away for a set of plans for one house from the series per year, free of charge.

The Craftsman plans offered the average American family a house that was a home, based on the bedrock virtues of beauty, simplicity, utility and organic harmony. Stickley believed that the ';nesting instinct'; was ';the most deep seated impulse'; of humankind. He wrote in the magazine:

The word that is best loved in the language of every nation is home, for when a man's home is born out of his heart and developed through his labor and perfected through his sense of beauty, it is the very cornerstone of his life.

He intended in his home designs ';to substitute the luxury of taste for the luxury of costliness; to teach that beauty does not imply elaboration or ornament; to employ only those forms and materials which make for simplicity, individuality and dignity of effect.'; Today we are left with an unexplored legacy. Stickley's furniture has been researched and the findings presented in many books and articles, but his architectural contributions have yet to be fully examined. Perhaps this is because collectors whose passion is furnishings have yet to try collecting the ultimate Arts %26amp; Crafts piece-the piece everything was designed to fit into-a Craftsman Home.

How do we recognize a Craftsman Home?

Like a piece of Stickley furniture, a Craftsman Home has refinement of design and quality of construction and finish.

It is often site related and placed to advantage using the site.

The house is built with materials found on the site, and/or natural materials native to the region.

As with Stickley's furniture, the house designs rely on exposed structural elements for decorative details. The variety of natural materials provide textures for light to play on.

Voids, in the form of recessed porches and entrance ways, and terraces and pergolas, create visual interest.

Interiors emphasize form and function. Space is conservatively and creatively used for living, with design elements utilizing wood and built-in spaces such as inglenooks, benches and cabinets.

Light fixtures and hardware relate as design elements.

This philosophy and these decorative details were expensive to execute. Consequently, although the homes were idealistically conceived for the masses, they were built primarily by the middle class.

The rich had Greene and Greene, Frank Lloyd Wright and others as their Arts %26amp; Crafts-style architects. The poorer folk built Sears and Aladdin ';kit'; homes.

The middle class used Stickley's Craftsman Home plans, which they modified to suit their tastes and requirements and had built by local builders.

How many of these houses were actually built?

Stickley designed at least 241 homes and published over 221 plans.

He expended great effort promoting them, publishing a number of promotional pamphlets and at least two books, Craftsman Homes and More Craftsman Homes. [These books are available in inexpensive, quality reprints from Dover Publications.] Many of the house designs featured in this exhibit are described in these books.

We do not know how many were actually built but believe that a great many were built across the country. We speculate that the educated middle class built them and that they will be found mostly in areas around cities where the first suburban expansion took place. In larger cities they will be found in areas serviced at the turn-of-the century by commuter railroads and street cars. They will also be found in towns with universities or art communities.

    Who designed them?

We don't yet know for sure who designed the Craftsman houses. There are many different styles in the renderings, indicating different draftsmen at work. No architects are listed on Stickley's payroll records, but a number of draftsmen are noted as being in the architectural department. Of course there may have been a number of unlicensed architects among those draftsmen.

Nevertheless, considering Stickley's intense interest in the project, it is safe to say that he had major responsibility for the designs. Probably he had professional help along the way, and perhaps the designs were seen by a consultant at some point. Some few designs are out of character and may be the work of other architects. Before he established his new business he traveled to Europe and around the U.S., and he surely was aware of the various architectural styles of Josef Hoffmann, C. F. A. Voysey and M. H. Baillie-Scott, as well as Will Bradley interiors and the houses of the Prairie School movement, led by Frank Lloyd Wright. Also, Stickley appears to have been a ';quick read'; and may have learned a great deal from his brief associations with architects E. G. W. Dietrich and Harvey Ellis.

The house plans fall into four different periods

David Cathers, in his book, The Furniture of the Arts and Crafts Movement, divides Stickley's furniture work into periods. This system can be adapted to fit Stickley's house designs:

    The Experimental period is 1900-1903;

    The First Mission period, 1904-1907;

    The Mature period, 1909-1915;

    The Final Mission period, 1916.

From its beginning The Craftsman published house plans. Interior room designs began appearing in 1901, perhaps to display the furniture in the proper setting. Stickley must have known that it did not look good in the Victorian interiors of the time. The first house article was called ';The Planning of a Home'; and featured a design by architect Henry Wilhelm Wilkinson.

    The Experimental period is 1900-1903

In the early Experimental period The Craftsman printed suggestions for architectural details, although not always complete house plans. The prototypical Craftsman House appeared, a suburban house ';by the United Crafts,'; in an article by editor Irene Sargent. The design of the interior resembles the furniture-massive, plain and simple.

In early 1903, several houses designed by architect E. G. W. Dietrich appeared and the term ';Craftsman House'; was first used. All interiors, of course, showed Craftsman furniture. The relationship was being established: the furniture and the houses go together into a new living environment. The furniture was only part of a much broader picture-a new life style.

During 1903, architect/designer/artist Harvey Ellis came to work for Stickley and this brief relationship (Ellis died in 1904) strongly influenced Stickley for the rest of his career. Ellis designed a line of lighter, more art nouveau-looking furniture, and he wrote and drew extensively in The Craftsman. A series of very interesting conceptual houses by Ellis were published during 1903, including a Craftsman Home (a suburban house), an Adirondack camp, an urban town house and even a summer chapel and a farm house.

These designs were unlike anything previously published in The Craftsman. After Ellis' death the overt influences gradually disappeared, as Stickley reverted to plainer and more rectilinear designs. But the use of the curve and other Ellis signatures continued to show up in the furniture and houses.

In all truthfulness any type of latex house paint is safe to paint with kids living in the home. Your kids would be perfectly safe standing in the room while you are painting. However, I can understand your hesitancy. If you are worried about the fumes then use low VOC paints such as Harmony (no voc's) and Duration Home (low voc's ) from Sherwin Williams. Most people can hardly tell I am painting when I use these in their home. Also, no matter what paint you use, if possible have ventilation (fans and open windows work great) to disperse any VOC's and fumes much quicker. Your house will be perfectly safe within several hours (wait 24 hours if you want to be really safe.

    Good luck and happy painting!

PS - feel free to visit my site at http://thepaintprofessional.com/ to ask any other specific questions or to get helpful (time saving and money saving) painting tips!
Hopefully you use a low or no VOC paint. A couple of hours is usually sufficient, but if you could do 24 hours would be better, in case you had a few thick still wet areas. You know kids, the one spot in the house and they will find it.

It's going to take some hard work, 1st you will need to scrap all loose paint from ceiling, putty knife, 2';, 3'; scarpers, I've even used a wall paper remover tool with the replaceable blades. Be very care-full not to dig into the plaster. 2nd you'll need to sand and fill to feather roughness, 3rd two coats good primer. sanding any roughness. 4th one to two coats finish paintHi! Screw a layer of 1/2'; drywall right over the plaster ceiling. You'll be glad that you did.

Can matt paint be turned into satin or vinyl silk at home?

I am on a very tight budget to decorate and matt paint is very cheap. I can do my whole house up for what it costs for one can of branded vinyl silk. Is there anything that can be added to matt paint to give it a washable finish or sheen instead of having to buy it? I have paint tints already so can get the colours I want just not the sheen. Can matt paint be turned into satin or vinyl silk at home?
you would still need to buy some silk like the person above said...... having a matt finnish is also a good look tho, its soft and subtle, you may wantto just consider keeping it matt. as long as ya keep on top of cleaning etc dust shouldnt settle on the paint work and if ya did get marks on it just paint over that area at a cheap cost, and if its the colour your worried about when repainting just make sure when you mix the colours you want make some spare for touch ups.Can matt paint be turned into satin or vinyl silk at home?
The only way would be to mix in some vinyl silk of the same make, at least 60% silk to 40 % matt
Don't buy branded paints. Uk? Use Wilko/Wickes/B%26amp;Q etc paints, they're cheaper than Dulux/Crown etc.

I only use Dulux as a last resort. OR, do what I do, go to B%26amp;Q and see what Dulux custom made paints are being sold off half price. Folks get them made up, don't like them and B%26amp;Q sell em off at crazy low prices. Ok, you may have to adjust your mind to painting a room a slightly different shade or colour you'd set your heart on, but it's CHEAP.

I too have no spare cash, and I do this all the time.

Silks are much easier to keep clean, but short of going to a paint manufacturer and getting the decorators varnish that they put in to make it a silk finish (i have such a supplier on my doorstep), you 'll have to compromise by mixing matt and silk together to get a mid satin finish, not as shiny as silk
Go to a trade decorator supplier. Their paint is generally cheaper, and they often have cans of paint which people have had mixed and then changed their minds about. They usually sell this off super cheap, or in some cases if you ask nicely, give it away! Even if you have to pay to get something mixed, you can pick a Dulux colour (or other more expensive brand) and they will be able to mix it for you in a cheaper base.

To answer your original question, you can add emulsion gloss glaze to your paint. This will reduce the opacity, so you will need more coats. A better option, would be to overpaint with the glaze, or with waterbased acrylic varnish.

All these options will cost more money though, so why not spend it on the paint, and cut down on your work.
Vinyl matt is as washable as silk - but is more forgiving on less than perfect surfaces. Very few places have non vinyl nowadays but if you get it use it - it is cheap enough to recoat it if it gets dirty which will be some considerable time.

  • Is there a way to find out what brand and color of paint was used on the walls in my home?

I want to do some touch painting and my landlord has no idea what was used.Is there a way to find out what brand and color of paint was used on the walls in my home?
Take a chip of paint in to home depot. They scan it and might get it close. Good luck!Is there a way to find out what brand and color of paint was used on the walls in my home?
Not really. If you can scrape off a chip and take it to the paint store you can probably match it or get very close. Look at the color chips in the light at the store, then in the light at your home before you have them mix paint for you. The light you are using to compare can make a big difference.
Take a switchplate off the wall and take a chip of the paint from that area. Take it to Home Depot and they can match it. As for brand, I don't think it's possible.
If you can take a sample of the paint from the wall and take it to most diy shops they have a machine which will match the colour for you, Beware though as I have touched up painwork in my house and I have known what paint ive used but due to the amount of time that I last decorated and paint fades and generally gets dirty you can see the touch up areas.
NO there is no thing that can tell you WHAT BRAND ! Just maybe what color is all you can find out! or ask the Landlord if possible. Good luck
find an un noticable corner and chip of about a size of a small coin, and take to a hardware store - they put it in a scanner and mix up the exact colour for you..... clever eh?!
Buy a gallon of a decent latex satin enamel and just repaint the whole thing. It's not a major project, contrary to what our mind wants to think, and it's a lot less work than trying to match little smidges.

Rental home presence of lead paint?

We viewed a rental property today and decided against getting it. It was a very spacious house and would have been great. When we were touring I spoke to the landlord since I have 3 children and asked if there were any testing done for lead paint. He said no. It's old enough that it probably at least had some at one point. So when I said I'd call the health department and see if we could check he said ';there will be no paint removed in this house';. Isn't it his responsibility to make the home safe and remove the lead paint efficiently as a biohazard or something? Isn't that a law? We did decide to not rent it because of his general attitude about not caring for others' safety and he obviously wouldn't fix it if there were a problem but I'm just wondering if that's something he is legally obligated to deal with.Rental home presence of lead paint?
I'm looking at a handout my apartment building gave me when I moved in (as I live in an old building). It has the seals of the EPA, Consumer Product Safety Commission, and Hud on it, so its not a state or local thing. (and you can probably find it online)

This handout says, in part, that the landlord has to disclose any known lead hazard before a lease takes effect and that the lease has to disclose it. It does say that lead based paint is not a hazard if its in good condition. Peeling, chipping, chalking, cracking, or damaged paint is a problem. Sanding or anything else that turns it into dust is bad. Knowing that there's lead based paint in the house doesn't tell you that there's a problem or how bad the problem is. A professional has to evaluate the danger and a professional has to be the one to remove it. They say that if you make sure that any peeling or chipped paint has to be cleaned up and fixed right away and that you should clean often and then thoroughly clean your cleaning implements.

Anyway, it looks like he doesn't have a responsibility to remove it, though he does have to fix any chipped or peeling paint when you report it. The most important thing, though, was his attitude, which I think you're right about. I do think that anybody who is potentially renting to families should know the hazards and be able to answer your questions. If he told you that he'd had it checked out, he knew which areas needed to be watched, and told you exactly what you should do and he would do, you might not have decided to take the house. However, it would have been about the paint rather than feeling like you'd end up with a landlord you couldn't trust.Rental home presence of lead paint?
If there is lead paint then yes he is reasponsible to have it removed because he is the owner. However, it is his house and if he doesn't want things removed that is his decision. Also, if someone did hire another to check the paint and there was lead they could report the owner.
No, it is not a requirement for the landloard to remove the lead paint.

Removing lead paint causes it to become airborne which is 1000 times worse.

Lead paint can be legally encapsulated with new paint.

If you are uncomfortable with this as a solution you have the option to move elsewhere.
Use of lead based paint stopped in the mid 1970's in the US, so there would be 40 years of paint applied over any LBP. Private homes were exempt from being tested for LBP and it was up to the homeowner. If the house is that old, it probably has asbestos insulation also. You can't reasonably expect a retired homeowner to go to the expense of gutting and abating his house for what you were going to spend on rent. You will probably find some exemptions for single family homes in the LBP and asbestos abatement laws. I don't blame the landlord for not giving in to your misinformed requests.
He is only required to remove lead paint if it is peeling or he does renovations. If he leaves the trim in place, he doesn't have to remove it. You can buy a test kit at any hardware store. You scratch a few layers of paint off and wipe on some liquid. If it turns pink, there's lead.

As long as your kids don't chew on the woodwork, there is no harm in lead paint. It's been used for hundreds of years, and we've managed to make it this far without going extinct.

And he doesn't care, because it would be cheaper to leave the house empty than remove it. You'd have to live there for 10 years before he'd break even.
My understanding that when you rent an older property the landlord can use a ';lead paint disclosure'; document to get around stripping all the paint. I bought a lease/rental agreement at office depot and it came with a CD ROM with just this form on it, so this must be pretty common.

    Home made Chalk board paint?

I want to make my own chalkboard paint but confused. I know you need paint and unsanded tile grout. When I went to the hardware store they had unsanded tile grout in different colors. Does the color of grout depend on the color of paint. What color of grout do i use. Do different color grout go with different colors to blend in more easliy.Home made Chalk board paint?
i would buy white. then the color of your paint will make whatever color you want. if you buy colored grout then the grout tile plus the color of the paint is what you will get. white grout would be the easiest route to take. or even cream. your color will just be pastel. have fun

If you look on a can/bucket of paint it tells you how many square feet it covers. Always buy extra! If you are using the same color in multiple areas try and mix the different batches together. That being said you need to get the measurements of each room, and the ceiling height, and figure your amount of square footage on the WALLS. You can't use the FLOOR square footage...

What kind of paint to use on the outside of a mobile home?

I would like to paint the outside of my mobile home but I don't want to have to do it every year so do u know of some good paint that would last for a few years? What kind of paint to use on the outside of a mobile home?
Of course you're going to want to clean it very well first. You can pick up a box of trisodium phosphate (TSP) from most hardware stores. Use a diluted mixture of that and a large shop broom to scrub down the exterior, then rinse well with a hose.

Once the home is dry, use KILZ exterior primer. Kilz is amazing stuff - I once used Kilz on paint that was chipping off, thinking that I would just Kilz the good stuff and get rid of the chipping paint later. Boy, was I ever wrong! Not only did the Kilz clear up any stains on the surface, but it also re-attached the paint that was falling off!

You can get Kilz in latex or oil based formulas. The oil based has the longest lifespan, but either are truly good. For exterior, I would go with the oil based Kilz. You can have this tinted for economy's sake.

After you've used Kilz as a primer, you can use any quality exterior paint for the rest of the job. Be sure to look for a paint that has a long warranty period. If the paint discolors over time, the manufacturer (more often the store where you purchased) will at least replace the paint should it fail. With the Kilz, you probably won't live there long enough to have to see it repainted.

I need my living room, dining room, kitchen and stairway painted.I need to hire someone to paint some of the interior of my home, how much do painters charge?
The prices vary depending on how big the area is, what you want done %26amp; where you live. Just call a few local painters %26amp; have them come out %26amp; give you a free bid. But it will probably be any where from $300-$900. I hope this helps. Good Luck :)I need to hire someone to paint some of the interior of my home, how much do painters charge?
first of all anyone that thinks painters charge too much do not have a clue on what they are talking about. also the person that thinks $300 - $900 to paint 3 rooms and a stairway is way too low. i wouldn't prep them for that much. we are probabely the most underpaid of all of the trades and we are the ones that make everyones crap work look great. it also depends on where you live. i charge $40 per hour plus materials and taxes. ask any of your friends who they have used and if they where hire them again. you can also call a few local painters but do not go with the lowest price and please do not hire student painters. most of them have no clue on what they are doing and the people that own the franchise in your area pay them nothing and reap all of the profits.
I will totally do it for you!! I love painting! I just finished my living room myself %26amp;looks fab! Do you live in central IL?
A Lot!!! That's all i can tell you ( well unless you ask a close friend or relative to paint for u)
A couple of hundred for each room, plus the paint.

How do you choose paint colors for your home?

Are you talking about interior or exterior?

We recently painted several rooms in our house. I went to the library and got decorating and painting books so that I could see how they used colors and made note of what I did or didn't like. Also did this with some magazines.

I kept an eye out while watching TV shows...looked at what colors they painted their rooms and I began to see what kind of ';feel'; I liked.

Then I learned about ';warm'; and ';cool'; colors - do you want your place to feel ';warm'; and cozy? Or ';cool'; and crisp? warm colors: browns, reds, yellows, tans, oranges etc. Cool colors: blues, greens, purples

I decided that I wanted warm colors, and I picked a nice camel color, dark red (with orange/brown undertones, not pink undertones), and dark brown. I think to make the house look more unified and ';together'; they suggest using either mostly warm colors, or mostly cool colors (not both)

I went to the paint store and got a million swatches - pretty much all the warm colors, and I also got some cool colors just to see how they'd look. I taped them on the walls I was going to paint. You definitely need to take them home to see how they look in your room, usually they will look completely different than in the store. I eliminated a bunch of them until I was down to one or two. Then I got some paint of those colors (they have small cans you can buy) and painted part of the wall. After it dried, I decided if I liked it or not.

I painted the wall with our fireplace on it the red. Now I don't like it so much, but everyone else does. Then I painted one wall in the kitchen dark brown. Everything else I painted camel because it's the most ';neutral';.

google ';warm and cool colors'; to learn more about that. I didn't realize how important it was until I started learning about it.

Or you could hire a designer to come in and advise you. Most will come on a one time basis and charge anywhere from $75 to $200 to help you choose colors.

Oh, and paint colors should be the LAST thing you pick when decorating. It is a lot easier to find pretty much any color of paint to go with your furniture, pillows, wall decor, than it is to find furniture specifically to match your paint.

Again, choose a warm color theme or a cool color theme for your furniture/pillows/etc. and go from there.

Good luck! How do you choose paint colors for your home?
As others have suggested, I always use the main piece of furniture in a room as the starting point. For example, my sofa is sort of a sage green colour with tan piping on the cushions, so I used the piping as the basis for choosing a wall colour. Likewise in the bedroom, I chose a colour out of the pattern on my duvet - not the most prominent colour, but one of the ';supporting'; colours. In both cases you can then add accents of other colours in smaller pieces of furniture, cushions, accessories etc.

Bathrooms are a little different as the fixtures tend to be all white or off-white most of the time. For bathrooms I tend to like cool colours such as blues and greens, and then use towels and the shower curtain to introduce little splashes of fun colour, pattern and texture.

When choosing colours I think it's also important to consdier all of the different light conditions that a room might experience through the course of a day. While a paint colour may look essentially tan or beige in some light, other light conditions could make it look more yellow or green, so it's a really good idea to look at your colour samples in various types of light for a few days before deciding. How do you choose paint colors for your home?
I would begin with colors that you prefer--if you'll look around at your belongings, you'll find that you've probably started out picking those out already. I like a colorful, but tasteful home. What you want to do is make your rooms flow from one to the other (called transitioning). To do this, paint your living room, for example, khaki with red and green touches (in the accessories). In an adjoining room, paint it, for example, red with green and khaki accessories. In another room, paint it green with red and khaki accessories. Keep in mind that you don't have to use the EXACT same reds, khakis, and greens in each room.

If you want to mix patterns, choose a large print for one pillow and a small check for another (in similar color pallettes).

    Have fun with it!

    HTH
I choose paint colors by looking at the furniture color in that certain room. Say you were painting a living room, you would look at the color of your couches/chairs. You would want at least one color in that couch to match the wall. In my living room i have two colors. Every wall but one is tan. The one is blue. If you were painting a bedroom, look at the colors of the comforter on your bed. Hope i helped!
well usually people paint squares on the wall to choose which one they want.....

bright colors in little rooms are not the greatest ideas.. I once had a very bright orange in a little bathroom with florecent lights... it was horrible.... you couldn't focus on anything in the house but that room because it was so bright, so eventually my family an i painted it a neutral color, brown.................

figure out which color you would like to do in the room....

different colors set different tones an create different moods...

if you were ever in an art class, the color wheel will be loads of help for you.

so, what i would do, is figure out what color's ur interested in doing.

then i would paint squares on every wall, an different areas for that room..... you can then decide which color fits best in that room....

How do u choose Paint colors for your home?

At any paint store or home improvement store, you can get brochures from paint companies that show pictures of homes with various color combinations, both interior and exterior. They then show what the exact colors are (by name and catalog number), so you can pick the exact combination. You can also look through architectural design or home design magazines (like Better Homes and Gardens) to see photos of various home decors.

When you get an idea of the colors you want, you can get these little card at the paint store that have color samples on them. These are called paint chips. You can get a bunch of these in the approximate colors you're considering, and mix and match them to get the exact paint colors and combinations you want. How do u choose Paint colors for your home?
You might want to try Behr.com. They have a application online where you can simulate a room, or even upload pictures of the room you want to change and you can see what the colors would look like in them before you even hit the store. You can change the colors and mix and match. Then when you figure it out, you can print the color swatches from your computer and take them down to Home Depot and have your paint made up and then be ready to rock. Good luck!!

There are software programs that you could take pic inside you're house and then put them in the computer, and change the wall colors , floors etc. You can get it at Lowe's, called virtual Painter. its only 6 bucks. probably get it at other places too.I'm not a good decorator, how can i fix my home up i need ideas on choosing paint colors decorating ideas.
Check out colorsmart you can pick a color already in the room and it will show you coordinating color combinations.
Web sites, magaizines and check out books on decorating.
    Get some home decorating magazines.
If you want to stay with the kitchen floor I would work with those colors, but don't use the exact colors but lighter shades of them. Though you could paint red with a brownish/green trim. Or put a new flooring in and start from there. It really depends on what you like; lite, dark, bright colors, or wall paper or wall trim. There are just so much you can do depending on how big your kitchen is and if it opens to the living-room to blend the colors with it. . . . . . . if you have the money you can hire someone to help, do the work, and/or advise you
Visit HGTV.com (home and garden television). They have a TON of ideas and before and after pics. Have fun!
i think same colour of paint and tiles in all rooms is a very good idea.. some nice ni8ghtlamps in some corners of the house would be great.. on a table you could have some floating candles surrounded with flower petals.

I dont know about the vanilla...I wouldn't want to stain my paint and walls...I would just ask a friend to watch my baby for a little while. Better safe than sorry.

I wouldn't trust my 7 month old with a paint brush...at that point they are still sticking things in their mouths...besides is she even walking yet?
well you can ask her to help you. just teach her how and she'll help. that will open her mind to new things and keep her busy and out of your way.
If you can keep them in a seperate room sure or keep the room very well ventilated and the baby as far away from the paint as possible
Just open up a few windows and turn on some fans. I would keep the baby out of the room or the baby would probably touch the wall and leave fingerprints.
Dont know about the vanilla but I know if you cut an onion in half and leave in the room - it takes away the paint smell xxx
best not as the chemicals in paint is not good for baby

How long does it take for professional painters to paint the interior of a 1400 sq ft home?

    It depends on several factors.

    1. How many painters will be working on the job?

    2. What type of prep is involved?

    3. Are there repairs to be made before the painting is underway?

    4. Does the paint job include trim and doors?

We own and operate a painting company and have 3 employees. If there were no repairs, only prime and paint, including trim and doors, It should not take us more than 4- 5 days, 8 hours a day. Tops. How long does it take for professional painters to paint the interior of a 1400 sq ft home?

How do I calculate how many gallons of paint I need for the inside of my home?

I'm repainting and want to be able to estimate how many gallons I will need. How do I calculate how many gallons of paint I need for the inside of my home?
Number 2 has a clue,,, and after measuring,,, or rather DURING measuring, do not subtract windows or doorways. Allowing those added areas will give you extra paint, which you may need?

On every paint can is suggested the coverage area for that gallon. Then just compare your measurments.

That said, the suggested coverage is taken from THEIR testing, and your application may differ. Of course their disclaimers usually state that.

All paint has different qualities, and applies differently. Also the size roller nap you use will determine how fast, or slow the gallons are used up.

Flat is the most porous, most difficult to keep clean and maintain, after the fact.

Satin has more agents in it allowing for better cleanup.

    Semi gloss will have more clean ability agents but you may not want a sheen? Semi gloss also takes more paint to ';cover';

I've applied thousands of gallons of paint. I'd go with Satin, and two different size roller naps. 3/8 for smooth walls, 1/2 for more textured walls, and you should have extra if you follow your measurments as compared to recommendations on the can.

Example: a 10 x 12 room with 8 ft ceilings has 352 sq. ft. of paintable surface. I'm holding a gallon of satin from COLOR WHEEL, which states 250 to 350 sq. ft. per can depending on how porous the sub wall/paint/finish is. A gallon of paint COULD actually allow two coats however, depending on how you apply it.

Rev. StevenHow do I calculate how many gallons of paint I need for the inside of my home?
Email me...I'll help you out. Good answers in here, but you need to talk with someone.
length x width x height use the square footage and figure 300 to350 square feet per gallon of paint example 10x10 room with8ft wall heights will be 80 sg ft per wall comes to about 320 paintable surface so 1 gallon for one coat always do 2 coats for proper coverage and finish
Take one hose pipe close all windows and doors turn hose pipe on in room to be painted, wait for room to fill up with water, turn hose pipe off and drill hole in bottom of door catch water in 1 gallon bucket count number of buckets to empty room of water.

Take total number of buckets of water and divide by length + breadth + hight of room, VIOLA you have correct number of gallons of paint you need to decorate room.

May 8, 1903, Atuona, Hiva Oa, Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia), one of the leading French painters of the Postimpressionist period, whose development of a conceptual method of representation was a decisive step for 20th-century art. After spending a short period with Vincent van Gogh in Arles (1888), Gauguin increasingly abandoned imitative art for expressiveness through colour. From 1891 he lived and worked in Tahiti and elsewhere in the South Pacific. His masterpieces include the early Vision After the Sermon (1888) and Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going? (1897-98).

  • What is a good color to paint the walls of a home office?

Pink! =)What is a good color to paint the walls of a home office?
I recently did my whole house.Since my kitchen is open I needed the colors to flow into the dining area and living rm.I used a nice chamomile yellow in kitchen with 2 walls accented in a nice rich mocha beige. I extended the yellow in dining area also and painted the north and south walls with a rich Terra cot ta and the wall above the fireplace too.Stay away from true reds go with more of a Chianti red or wine color for accents.Greens can be fun if you stay in the cool zone with them and don't go to dark, add with a rich light brown.I did this combo in my office/ den,It's very inviting and soothing.Good luck.I went to a expensive paint-designer studio for the paint swatches, collected several in the shades I liked, make sure you have natural light coming in the room because what may seem lite on swatch will look darker when held up on wall. You can also buy small test colors to try. Then go to Home Depot or Lowe's and they can mix the color you want for a fraction of the cost of the designer store.I'm just thrilled with the results .My friends love the results and say It's so inviting and cozy. What is a good color to paint the walls of a home office?
well it depends upon many things like-

    1.kind of business

    2.color of furniture

    3.personal taste etc.

so if u have an ad agency or anything like that then you can experiment by using different color schemes even the darkest ones but if your business is like accountant, lawyer or any other serious business then go for lighter shades like pale yellow, light blue, turquise, white etc.but dnt forget it to match it with your furnishings........
play around with the Sherwin Williams color visualizer to find something that you like. It is the best paint visualizer on the web, imho. I like how their color palette is laid out, I like that you can search by color family %26amp; color name, the ';painted'; rooms look the most realistic, and it suggests coordinating color schemes. You can literally spend hours:

Take a look at a color called ';turkish coffee'; (# 6076). I think it would make your home office very professional looking - as though you're in a library. If you think that's too dark, then maybe a light gray like ';crushed ice'; (# 7647).
I think you have to match your wall color with the furnishings of your home office, and what kind of business you do with your home office. Personally, I like strong colours such as very contrast strong blue, red, strong yellow, pink.......on the borderline, but will like it much later. And very gentle, honest and give without taking....green. I hate brown, never ever will see it again!
I like deep reds or olives or just a neutral tan or mocha.

Also, a theme that I LOVE for home offices is maps. The old world tan colored maps. I have a globe in my office and would like to add a map canvas painting one day. Hobby Lobby has lots of accessories that would look great in a home office and are inexpensive.
it depends on the type of business and gender that you have,

If you are into the fashion business , I would go with bright colours, but if I find it too difficult answering this question unless you give me more info .
Taupe or muted sage green. Something calm and even. A very soft muted butter yellow would be soothing, happy and perky.
I would go with taupe, it's very professional looking
a nuetral that will look good with wooden desks and chairs. tan, olive green, and deep red
