Just moved into a trailer, the walls are some sort of cheap paneling with what looks like textured wallpaper on it. The wallpaper has to go, need some new paint. What do I paint it with? Can I paint right over this stuff? Any info would be great. How can I paint the walls inside my mobile home?
TRY THIS! Paint the walls with a primer like KILZ. Then buy a 5 gallon bucket of joint compound - it's already premixed. Use a trowel and put it on the walls in a random pattern - don't make it too thick or it will crack when it dries. You can do different patterns, or make it look like adobe or stucco - using what's called a skip trowel technique. When it dries - takes 2-3 days depending on the humidity - note: it turns from a gray to white when dry - simply paint with your favorite color. This is a wonderful technique and adds a Tuscan feel to any room. Terrific for covering wallpapered walls that JUST won't come off! Let me know what you think. How can I paint the walls inside my mobile home?
The walls in most mobil homes are either made of wood paneling, or plasterboard covered with a wall paper, and yes they can be painted.
For a quick job, just paint over the paper as is, batten strips and all.
For a better job, remove the batten strips, and use drywall paste and joint strips as in the installation of dry wall, sand, prime and paint.
Dont try to remove the opriginal covering, as it will not come off without damage to the panel.
Now, I say this regarding the paper assuming it's the original structure. as sent from the factory. if it has been recovered, then maybe you can remove the paper and get back to the original covering, but this is a mess and almost not worth the effort.
Yes, you can paint right over wallpaper. I did. No problem. Just don't soak it on like there is no tomorrow. You don't need a primer if the the wallpaper is a light or pastel color. You might be able to cover it with one good coat of a neutral satin finish latex if the texture of the wallpaper is not too pronounced. If you are considering a dark color, you might need to two coats because the light under-color may show through where the roller did not catch. I painted over a deeply textured wallpaper in my mobile home and there were some touch-ups required after the paint dried. Now, if you remove the wallpaper instead you will have to wash the walls very well before applying primer or a cheap flat latex to prime. I don't recommend glossy paint as it tends to show off any imperfections in paneling. Satin finish seems to be just right.
If it's the same stuff as in my mobile, it's vinyl wallpaper which could be on thin drywall or on pre-papered wood panels. Don't try and take it off, you'll just have a horrible mess. Prime it with a primer made for vinyl(I used Zinsser) and then paint over that. If you're painting any sort of colour, have the primer tinted the same colour, it may save you one coat of paint. The less gloss in the paint, the less you'll notice the texture. I hope the texture isn't too bad, because if you can't stand it your other choice is to paper over it with anaglypta paper, then paint. The paper is expensive.
I have painted over wallpaper, check with a paint supplier, I think I used an oil based paint on wallpaper. It was many years ago. My textured paper looked kind of scary when it was wet but dryed alright. Good luck!
I don't think I would paint over wall paper. But to paint the actual walls I would use a good latex paint. A good one cote paint will save having to paint on a primer first.
