My husband and I are having a bit of a debate on who should paint our 2 story home this summer. He doesn't want to pay $4K for someone else to do it, and wants to do it himself. I'm confident he can do it, but don't want hime to be busy painting on his days off (we have a 3 year old and a baby coming in April). I'd rather find a licensed, bonded, and insured contractor. The cost would make us very tight, but I think it's manageable. Suggestions?Who should paint the exterior of our home?
I'm the type of person who absolutely HATES paying someone to do something that I think I can do just as well. I've remodeled a bathroom, installed wood floors, repaired my heat/AC, painted the interior, etc. But when it came to painting the exterior of my house, it was time to call in a professional.
We also have a two story house. Sure, I COULD paint it and I'm sure it would turn out fine but it would probably take me weeks worth of work on a ladder plus the cost of materials.
We had a local crew do ours and it was money well spent as far as I'm concerned. Our house is not small (@ 3500 sq ft) and they only charged about $1800. They pressure washed the house, sidewalk and driveway one day and painted it a couple days later. They had a crew of about 10 working on it and painted all the trim, windows, doors, shutters, porch rails, screened-in porch inside and out in one day.....it was amazing. And, they did good work.
Like everyone above mentioned, get a few quotes. Also, talk to your neighbors or keep an eye out around your area for paint crews. Right now with the start of new homes slowing you may have a better opportunity to get a good price.Who should paint the exterior of our home?
Sounds like something YALL need to work out.
If he's not painting the house will he be in a beer joint? *ducks*
Use a contractor.......get several bids........don't always pick the low bid, but make sure you aren't getting burned. Pick the contractor you liked at bid time. If he was unpleasant and difficult when he came out to bid, he will likely be the same for the whole job. Have your husband work an extra day to help with the cost. That way your husband is doing what he does best and your house will thank you for it!
the exterior is a job for a professional. you will save money in the long term by using quality paints and proper application. a two story job can be dangerous no matter how experienced the painter.
Get a few estimates, pick the one who:
1) Will power wash it first
2) Use a primer/undercoat
3) And put two coats of paint on the house
Ask for references and then choose
